WIBTA for not going to family Christmas after my sister attempted to steal from me over Thanksgiving?

I'm a 40+ female. I hosted Thanksgiving dinner @my house this year & organized 4 vans for us to take shopping on Black Friday.
  • 03
My mother & sister (R is my older sister) stayed over @ my house rather than getting hotel rooms.
  • 04
R went with me when I zeroed the balance on my Christmas $ account on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving
  • 05
When we got home put it in the safe. She was with me when I opened the safe.
  • 06
When I went to take the $ out on Friday I found that it was gone!
  • 07
$1k missing from my safe (in my closet, in my room.) So I went out into the living room where everyone was gathering to get ready for shopping & announced that my Christmas $ had been stolen.

My mother immediately said "R give your sister back her $ right now." R protested for a bit that it wasn't her who had taken it.
  • 10
So I took my guests into my closet one @ a time. R was the only who was able to the safe & she did it on the first try.
  • 11
The others were all family members who actually live near by & are over often. How it is that they couldn't open it despite being in my home weekly but she could after staying a few nights is definitely weird.

This year our younger sister (we'll call her T) is hosting Christmas. T called to ask when I would be arriving & I told her that I'm still thinking about whether or not to come.
  • 13
T told our mother who is now on me to "forgive & forget" because R wasn't successful in stealing the $.
  • 14
She clarified that if R had gotten away with she could understand but I got my $ back so why make a fuss?
  • 15
Because I don't want to stay in a house with a thief who would steal from her own family.

I'm not heartless: I still got Christmas presents for all of her kids/grandkids & had them mailed to Ts house.
  • 18
It's not their fault that their mother/grandma is a thief so they shouldn't be punished. So WIBTA if I skipped family Christmas because my sister tried to steal $ from me?

Salty Signature_3472 She stole from you. You never said if she gave a reason or apologized. She is lucky you didnt call the police. NTA

OP Imme_notu She said that she didn't think that I would notice it/care because "you pulled out $1k, who does that?" So basically she thinks that I have so much $ I wouldn't miss it? Which is absolutely bonkers.
  • 21
Possible_Raspberry75 She didn't think you'd notice the money was gone?
  • 22
OP Imme_notu She found out that she earns about 1/4 of what I do. Since she thinks that I'm flush with $ that I could just go & get more. Or use a credit card which I cancelled after the card number got stolen

lidder444 I suggest you get a second lockbox/ safe for valuables and money. Only keep the original one for paperwork your family can access.
  • 24
lidder444 DO NOT EVER TELL ANYONE THE COMBINATION TO A SAFE. DON'T EVEN TELL ANYONE YOU HAVE ONE. Seriously
  • 25
OP Imme_notu All of my siblings have safes. Our mother taught us to keep our paperwork in a lockbox or safe. We all know where each other's safes are too. Plus my cousins have to know about because of the POA paperwork. But I will never let anyone into the room when I open ot again.

MildLittlRain NTA, but why not just keep money in a bank account? Keeping cash is so outdated

greeneyesonly She didn't fail at stealing. She stole from you, then was forced to return it. NTA
